Gene Nathan Barrett, MD, age 64, passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on April 14, 1948 to Willie Lee Barrett and R.L. Barrett in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1966, he graduated from Bossier High School in Bossier City, Louisiana. After high school, he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in 1970. Dr. Barrett earned his Medical degree from L.S.U. School of Medicine in New New Orleans in 1974, and completed his residency in Pediatrics at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee in 1977. In the Fall of 1981, he joined the private practice of Douglas Pediatrics in Douglasville, Georgia where he emphasized his interest in Endocrinology. Dr. Barrett, a brilliant physician, was loved and adored by all of his patients and their families and became known as "Dr. Gene" by everyone in the community. He will always be remembered by his enthusiastic personality and contagious laugh. His outside interests included music composition, all types of fishing, outdoor activities, computer technology, and time with his canine companions.

I am an employee of Dr Barrett.
I can say for sure the world
has lost a great man and a wonderful
Dr. He helped so many people during
his life. He could calm any upset
parent and bring help to any sick
pt. At the same time making you laugh
and feeling well taken care of.
That is what makes a good Dr.
He will be missed by many

I was a patient of Dr. Genes probably up until the age in which you are no longer allowed to continue to see your pediatrician. I can remember sitting in the exam room as a kid and could hear as Dr. Gene made his way down the hall, one room at a time. I remember hearing him knock and enter each room, and just after entering I can remember always thinking how he seemed to know everyone like they were long lost friends. He had a way of making you feel that you were the only thing he had going on at that moment... which is something rare in healthcare these days. A great guy, he will be missed!

I just learned today of Dr.Genes passing....I cried like a baby...I hadn't been back to Sandhill Peds in awhile and at that time Dr.Gene was in Texas fishing...Talk about a blow today....to all of us.Hes been my children's pediatrician for 19 years total...I never took them to him that he did't get them well off the first trip to him and always remembered everything....He enriched our lives greatly and I feel absolutely honored to have known him...Many blessings, hugs and much love to friends family and co-workers...

We will miss Dr. Gene. He was a wonderful doctor. My son went there for 18 years. No matter how worried you may have been about your child he would always make you smile. His smile, laugh and excellent care for my son will be remembered.

I was heartbroken to hear of Dr. Gene's passing. what a WONDERFUL man and blessed physician. When I told my teenaged children about it, they felt like I did--- like we had lost a member of our family. Dr. gene and my youngest shared the same birthday and I will always remember how he made the kids feel at ease no matter the situation. He will be truly missed.

When one is a mother to two little ones who "seem to catch everything" it is easy to feel guilt that you must be doing something wrong. Dr. Gene would have none of that-for 27 years he made me smile, laugh, and sigh with relief. Anna and David knew that Dr. Gene was "their" doctor way past the age that one would stop going to a pediatrician. God blessed us with this kind, generous, brilliant man. My last conversation with Gene just weeks before he passed away was about crocheting-he had crocheted 72 afghans during the past year during his illness. There is nothing this man couldn't do. He has left a Gene-sized hole in our hearts.

Dr. Gene was absolutely the best doctor, advisor, and confidant. My daughter, Susan, is now 31 years old with her own set of 2 month old twins now. We saw Dr. Gene from the time she was 1 year old until she married. I was not aware that he was ill, and heard of his death while away for Christmas. The world, especially Douglasville, is so much the better for him walking in our midst. No matter what time of day or night you could count on Gene to call you or see you. I have waited many hours in that crowded waiting room to have him come in to the room, laughing, crazy ties and make everyone feel better. He was one of a kind and I know there will never be another. I pray he is in heaven now.

Dr. Gene was a fantastic doctor. My child was born 8 weeks prematue and I was very worried. Dr. Gene calmed my nerves and took extra special care of him. When he had colic I could call Dr. Gene any time and he would call me back. He was more concerned about how I was handling it and very empathetic. I could continue on but basically today my child is fifteen years old and very healthy. I attribute this to Dr. Gene's expert care. We will always remember him and our prayers and thoughts are with him and you - his family.

We were with Dr. Gene for 24 years. He always knew how to calm my nerves about my sick boys. He would walk through the door and always, always, compliment me in some way and find a way to make us laugh. He listened, cared and loved and I will forever be grateful to him.

I am 63yrs old and my children were one of the first Dr Gene had when he started here. Now my grandchildren had the chance to love him and trust him as there mama did. My little granddaugher Kirstyn bought a pair of glasses and went around calling herself "Dr Gene" and we even made a song about Dr Gene Dr Gene everybody loves Dr Gene!!!
My heart is so broken for he was a dear friend of mine I could tell him anything and got to chat when the children and grands would come and see him. What a wonderful Dr one of the best and men I had a chance to to call my friend. I still have the pict of Kirsyn wearing Dr Gene's glassesPosted by Wanda Morris from Carrollton, GA - Dear friend on

When someone makes a difference in your life, you should tell them. Dr. Gene was our son's doctor from birth on and that child is now 25 years old. It was Dr. Gene's style of medicine that drew our son into the medical field himself and Dr. Gene's letter of character reference still hangs proudly on the wall of that boy who grew with Dr. Gene sometimes pulling him, sometimes pushing him and often catching him into Adulthood. Our entire family thought the world of Dr. Gene Barrett and I believe that the world will seem a bit emptier without his smile, laughter, stories, jokes and his concern for anyone lucky enough to have had him be a part of their lives. God has truly taken home a deserving Man. I'm wagering that God has already placed Gene Barrett on the Welcoming Committee..and that he's with his beloved Isobel.

What can you say about someone who truly made a difference in your life? I'll give it a try, I never really believed much in my Granny's old saying of "Angels Among Us" that is until I sat in the exam room of Douglas Pediatrics in July of 1987 complete with a fretful newborn son when in strolls this tall Doctor with one of the most contagious smiles and infectious laughter that I've ever seen or heard. He acted as though he'd known my husband and I for years instead of 5 minutes and this "Doc" with all of his knowledge and great common sense was to become our very own "Angel Among Us". Never had I been in a physicians office where I was put so at ease in under 2 minutes. Dr. Gene had a way of calming we Mothers down, because truth be told most of the time is IS the Moms who are in there with the sick and crying children because most Daddys have to be at work and as the world knows, Mommys give the best hugs or so my kids used to say, well now those kids are 35 and 25 and they grew with Dr. Gene's hands sometimes pulling, sometimes pushing and a lot of time catching them into Adulthoood. His many words of wisdom particuarly resonated with our son, and it was Dr. Gene's style of medicine that drew him into the medical field himself. To this day, Dr. Gene's letter of character reference remains proudly displayed on the wall of our now grown son. Throughout the years there were hospital stays and no matter what hospital, Dr. Gene showed up, he was involved in his patient's care from beginning to end, no matter what. Once during a hospital stay, at 2am in walks Dr. Gene, when I asked what was he doing there at 2am this wonderful man said "I just wanted to make sure you had NOT managed to convince yourself that you're the worse mother in the world"..God love him for saying that because that's exactly what I was thinking..I slept after that. Throughout the years, as I sat in the waiting room, I would hear people say "Dr. Gene is so good with children, it's a shame he never had any of his own" and I thought "Are you Kidding??? Dr. Gene has Thousands of children!!" and they couldn't have been in better hands, I often wondered if Dr. Gene knew he was like a surrogate father to some of those kids. Our entire family thought the world of Gene Barrett and I truly believe that the world will now seem a bit emptier without his laughter, smiles, stories and jokes and his genuine concern for all who were lucky enough to have had him be a part of their lives. God has taken home a deserving Man. And we'll be interested in hearing what God thinks of Dr. Gene's rather wicked sense of humor, when we meet again some day..after all, God gave him that wonderful sense of humor. Personally, I'm betting that God already has Gene Barrett on the Welcoming Committee. ~

Dr. Gene was wonderful and fun! He always took such good care of my children, now ages 28 and 24. He helped me and my husband feel secure about our childrens' health and made our kids smile even in difficult circumstances. He will be greatly missed.

Dr. Gene was a wonderful physician and friend to our family. The funniest memory is when my husband, children and I went to the office for treatment. I was also ill and Dr. Gene fussed at my husband, asking him why he couldn't do this on his own. He didn't know that I also had an appt. down the hall. We still get a big laugh about that one.
