Betty Maltzahn

When I think of Betty, it makes me smile. She had a lovely smile, was a sweet, kind, beautiful and witty woman. She was not afraid to speak her mind if she didn't like something and I admired her very much. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and friend. She was a skilled and talented cook and she taught me how to make her cucumber tomato salad which I love tot his day and think of her everytime

She was a skilled and talented cook and she taught me how to make her cucumber tomato salad which I love tot his day and think of her everytime I make it. She will be missed. I loved Betty and extend my deepest sympathies and love to the entire Maltzahn clan.

When my sister started dating Phil, I had the occasion to meet Betty and Chuck. I thought she was so pretty and glamorous, and I have to so say I never saw her when she didn't look beautiful. I know that she loved cooking and catered to her family's favorite foods. I have several of her recipes and they are all delicious. She and Chuck were fun to sit and visit with and I think it's fair to say that Betty had pizzazz. I will miss her in this world and look forward to seeing her in the next.

Betty Maltzahn was my most precious Aunt. She was with my mother and father on the day of my birth (August 5, 1941) and was one of the first to hold me. Betty always told me that being there to be witness to my birth was always a very special experince in her life. That "special day" was only the beginning of a friendship that would last for the ensuing 72 years.

Even though I never lived close to Betty

Betty Maltzahn was my most precious Aunt. She was with my mother and father on the day of my birth (August 5, 1941) and was one of the first to hold me. Betty always told me that being there to be witness to my birth was always a very special experince in her life. That "special day" was only the beginning of a friendship that would last for the ensuing 72 years.

Even though I never lived close to Betty and Chuck's home, I always made a point to visit them as often as I could. Without exception, Betty always put on a meal for me that could not be replicated anywhere. She had a special way of always making me feel like a member of her own family. Thus, I always felt "special" when I came to visit them.

Besides Betty's natural beauty, which was obvious to everyone, she also had an internal beauty that showed itself in her kindness and generocity to others. She had a very loving heart and her devotion to her husband, Chuck and their two sons and their families was full of warmth and joy.

I recall that during one of my last visits to Betty's and Chuck's home, Betty shared with me a lot of memories of her childhood. Having grown up during the depression years and in a society then that did not acknowledge the spirit and ingenuity of women, Betty overcame a lot of hardships, which in retrospect may well of been the "seeds" of her spunk, drive and spirited way of life. Betty Maltzahn was a real "Joan of Arc" in my eyes.

My wife, Judy and I will forever miss Betty and our love for her will always be nurtured by the many fond memories of our times we spent together.

Betty, we love you and will see you again someday. In the mean time, God Bless.

My family moved in next to Chuck and Betty when I was about 5 years old or so. Let's just say a long time ago!! There is no way that I could ever write all of the memories that I have of both Chuck and Betty. They were the best neighbors ever. We would go over and visit when they were working in the yard and they would show us what they were doing

To the family of Betty Maltzahn,

My family moved in next to Chuck and Betty when I was about 5 years old or so. Let's just say a long time ago!! There is no way that I could ever write all of the memories that I have of both Chuck and Betty. They were the best neighbors ever. We would go over and visit when they were working in the yard and they would show us what they were doing in the flowers or the garden and sometimes on the driveway when they were cracking walnuts. In the summer time they would invite us up to the deck and tell us to go get a popsicle and of course we knew right where they were in the freezer in the garage!! That would typically infuriate my father as he didn't want us "mooching" off of the neighbors, but they would just laugh at him and tell him "that's who we buy them for"! Chuck and Betty sent Toby and I up in an airplane for our birthday one year....over Creston. I had never been in an airplane before and it was an experience that was completely surreal. I remember Betty looking gorgeous anytime she stepped out of the house, always looking like a million bucks and I remember Chuck walking everyday up to the post office. We reaped the benefits of her wonderful cooking always had fresh bread and pies and brownies and sometimes entire spaghetti meals!!! She was a wonderful cook and we LOVED to eat whatever she sent. I loved just sitting and visiting with both Chuck and Betty. So wise with wonderful insight. I could go on an on. Change is so hard. She will be forever missed.

We were close neighbors for many years. Your Mom and Dad would always comment on our Christmas lights . She could see them from her bedroom window. We had many visits and she was such a wise woman. She always had her makeup on and was beautifully dressed. She and Chuck were so good to us . When Doug would mow the yard, a loaf of Zucchini bread would be waiting for him, and maybe some Pear Honey. She so loved to cook for others. She would prepare a special meal and send it over with Chuck or have us come pick it up. Betty would always ask about our children and they would go to visit Chuck and Betty too.
I enjoyed going to the store for Betty . She always had a detailed list.
I visited with them a while back at Prairie View. Betty was truly a wonderful and wise woman. Special Memories we will hold dear.

Its hard to find words adequate to memorialize a great mother. So may memories and experiences that tend to shape ones future. Lessons learned both hard and easy. There is some merit in the idea that we all turn into out parents. In this case, that is a good thing. I learned courage and commitment. Learned to be outspoken and honest. No one ever had to guess my mother's position on any issue. Learned how to manage money and life

Learned how to manage money and life challenges, although she was not a business professional, it seemed like she had a PHD in common sence and family affairs. Mother was one of my greatest resourses in strength and always supportive while knowing my inadequacies. Our world would be a better place if all could have mothers like mine.

We had many visits preparing for this inevitable event. I promised to take care of everything. I keep my promises.

But the memories that come to me are endearing. Like waking up at Grandma and Grandpas on a holiday morning when I was a child and having fresh baked cinnamon rolls, she would attend to everyone, even as time passed, she would insist on taking

But the memories that come to me are endearing. Like waking up at Grandma and Grandpas on a holiday morning when I was a child and having fresh baked cinnamon rolls, she would attend to everyone, even as time passed, she would insist on taking care of everything. Or sitting around with the family and I would sit by my Grandmother on the floor in order to coax her to run her fingernails through my hair as I listened to family stories. And of course when she and Grandpa came to take care of my brother and me for a week I remember her training a squirrel to come to the back door and eat walnuts out of her hand, and how funny it was that it made my mother so upset to have this squirrel waiting at the door for his nuts for several days afterwards. And mostly I always had a sense that she encouraged me to enjoy life and be a good person. When we would part after holidays, she would always say to me “Now you be good Todd” I would of course reply, “OK Grandma, I will”. Then she would say something like, “well don’t be too good or you won’t have any fun”. I loved my Grandma dearly, love my family and always think fondly of my childhood memories. Thank you Grandma for being such a wonderful person.

My grandpa adored my grandma so much. He always talked about how beautiful she was and how lucky of a man he was. I'm so lucky to call her my grandma and I look forward to seeing her again someday.

My Grandma was beautiful! There was not a day that went by that she didn't do her hair, makeup, & put on her beautiful jewelry. She did this to the very end. Three days before she passed she called my Mom to do her hair & when she went to the nursing home the next day she asked them to bring her makeup. When I walked in her room at the very end I had to tell her how beautiful she still looked. My Grandma was also the best cook I have ever known. She cooked for us often. Mike would plow their snow in the winter & within a few days we would have a meal delivered to our door. Always included his favorite cheesecake or sugar cookies. I tried to explain to her that she was spending alot more time than Mike's 10 minute plow job. That didn't matter to her she loved cooking and showing her appreciation. I have enjoyed all the hours I have spent with my Grandma & Grandpa picking pears & apples and them trying to teach me how to can. Unfortunatly I probably won't continue that tradition. But I will definately continue to cook many recipes that she has passed down to me. I love my Grandma very much & i will miss her very much.

Chuck and family - so sorry to hear of Betty's passing. I did not realize that she was no longer at home. So many good memories keep popping up as I think back through the years of knowing you and Betty. God bless each of you and may you find His peace for your loss.
