William "Bill" Byrne Buckles, 92, of New Richmond, passed away at 2:35a.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Franciscan St. Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana, surrounded by his family.

He was born June 5, 1920, in South Raub, Indiana, the son of the late Samuel "Eli" and Nettie Wooldridge Buckles. He grew up in Pine Village, graduating from Pine Village High School in 1939. Bill married Virginia L. Cornell on September 19, 1947, at St. Boniface Church in Lafayette. From a young age, Bill had a love for animals and worked on his family farm until he and Virginia bought their own farm just outside of Wingate. Mr. Buckles was an Honorary Life Member of The Knights of Columbus and also a member of Good Sam's Camping Club. For most of his life, he attended St. Bernard Catholic Church in Crawfordsville, and most recently joined the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in West Lafayette, where his son Rev. Father David J. Buckles is pastor. Throughout his wholesome life Bill enjoyed farming, camping, playing cards, woodworking, being outdoors, square dancing, and most importantly, spending time with family.

Survivors include six daughters: Theresa Bailey of New Richmond, Judy (Gerry) Adams of Garner, NC, Linda (George) Keller of Lafayette, Irene (Chuck) of Crawfordsville, Marcella Darling of Garner, NC, and Anita (Les Tuttle) Risk of Lafayette; four sons: Sam (Annie) Buckles of Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Rev. David Buckles of West Lafayette, Patrick (Teresa) Buckles of New Richmond, and Vince (Joyce Kaplan) Buckles of Garner, NC; 25 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and several other extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; a daughter, Margaret; a grandson, Geremy; and three brothers, Charles, Clarence "Floyd", and Robert "Bob" Buckles.

Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:30a.m. on Saturday at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in West Lafayette with Rev. Father David Buckles officiating. The burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery, Lafayette, immediately following the ceremony. Friends may call from 9:30-10:30a.m. Saturday, preceding the funeral mass. In addition, there will be a Rosary Service at 5:30p.m. Friday evening at the church, followed by a viewing until 8p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Religious Education Program and Youth Ministries at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament. Dear Friends Sam, Annie and Family,
Paula and I enjoyed very much enjoyed meeting Bill at his home and other family memebers a few years back following Sams recovery. Lots of wonderful stories were shared that day all centered around humor and love for family. Bill lived a long full active life and most important surrounded by a wonderful loving family. How fortunate for Bill and for all of you that you all move on with so many loving memories. Just the way all good things should end as well as to begin new.
There is nothing more powerful then love for and the bond of family.
May Bill's passing remind you all of that each day going forward and how fortunate we are to have one another.
We hope the pain passes quickly from your hearts and that Bill's kind and loving spirit will continue to lift yours.
Blessings to you all. Paula and Drew.

I have wonderful memories of Uncle Bill and Aunt Virginia on the farm as a young girl. Swimming in the horse trough, mucking in the pig wallow, and cooking his favorite meals, topped off with bread and Kayro syrup. Thanks for the sweet memories. Go gently dear soul. You will be missed by all who loved you.

Missed, but never forgotten. Bill was the best neighbor anyone could ever ask for. My dad died in 1975, and looking back, I guess I adopted Bill as the fatherly figure to give me fatherly advice. I consulted with him on almost every major construction update. He told how to do so many things from my first electric fence to setting the cylinder clearance on my IH 715 combine. Together, we built two grain bins, moved 2 corn cribs, hand-mixed and poured over 200 yds. of concrete, roofed his garage and my house, and many other jobs. I was around him most in the era from '75 to '93. I rented his farrowing house for 3 years, keeping it full to capacity in all 36 months. In the later years of that time I can never remember Bill without his pipe dangling from his lips, most of the time with it unlit. And I will always remember Pat during those years. They seemed inseparable, both of them laughing at each other (or me) whenever there was a mishap in our innovative construction ventures. My dad could have summed it up: "Bill was a dandy and a keeper." And that was the highest compliment he could ever have paid. MIss you Bill, but you already know that.
