Thomas Alonzo Haley, 84, of Bowling Green died Tuesday, January 9, 2018. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary Scott Broaddus Haley; two children Mary Tod Haley Gray (Clarke Gray) and Thomas Scott Haley (Mary Lissenden Haley); three grandchildren, Thomas Clarke Gray (Rebecca), Mary Paige Haley and Andrew Scott Haley; two sisters, Judy Haley Neal and June Haley Aguirre. One of 11 children, he was born in Lynchburg, VA and lived as a child in Pulaski County. He moved with his family to New Kent County where he was entrusted to drive a school bus while attending New Kent High School, from which he graduated in 1952. He served the Commonwealth first as a dispatcher, then as a Trooper with the Virginia State Police from 1952 until 1961, working Caroline County, and the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike. Later, he was a founding member and past treasurer of the Virginia State Police Alumni Association. A private business owner of Commonwealth –Carolina Sales, Inc., he traveled extensively throughout Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland and Delaware. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church for 57 years and served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a member of Kilwinning-Crosse Lodge #2-237 for 60 years. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, January 12, 2018 at Salem Baptist Church, Sparta, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, c/o Acca Shriners, 1712 Bellevue Avenue, Richmond, VA. 23227 or Salem Baptist Church, 24032 Sparta Road, Milford, VA. 22514.
