William G. “Bill” Black, claimed the promise of his Lord and Savior and went home to Heaven on August 10, 2017. He was preceded in death by his father, Lamen and his mother, Helen; daughter, Chelle and his dog, Cheyenne. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patsy; daughter, Missy and her husband, Donald Banes; beloved granddaughter, Abigail Blaha; brother, Ed and his family; brother in law, Jerry Miller and his family and his furry companion, Mr. Kitty. He was born and raised in Nottoway County, where he owned the family farms with his wife. He had a herd of Black Angus cattle which he loved but turned the management of the farm over to his daughter, Missy and son in law, Donald, when his health declined. He graduated from Crewe High School in 1959 and went to Diesel School in Nashville, Tenn. and later attended night classes at RPI (now VCU). In 1960, he went to work for Mack Trucks, Inc. in Richmond, where he started in the shop and eventually retired after 37.5 years, where most of his time was spent in sales. He was a former President of the Chesterfield Jaycees, a member of a committee that started the Salem Elementary School PTA, a member of the Bull Dog Club and selected to appear in the 1969 edition of the Outstanding Young Men of America. He received a Stewardship Award from the Piedmont Soil & Water Conservation District for the farms. He was a charter member and Deacon of Fellowship Baptist Church and member of Iron Bridge Baptist Church. Bill loved his wife’s family in the Bristol VA/TN area and he was loved by them in return. He spent the last week of his life before his hospitalization with them. He was so very blessed by his many friends who respected him greatly. He had a special place in his heart for the community of Arcadia, Florida and had hoped to be there this winter and spring to sing in the Easter cantata of Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church. He was fortunate to have traveled to 49 of the 50 contiguous states and loved nothing more than camping in these states. He always said he was a cowboy at heart and loved wearing western wear including cowboy hats and boots. He loved true country music and played the guitar until arthritis interfered. He had an unlimited amount of love and pride for his special granddaughter, Abigail, who graduated Magna Cum Laude from VCU in May of this year and was overjoyed to be able to witness the event. He will be remembered for being a wonderful husband, a spectacular father and grandfather, and a kind, caring, compassionate, and selfless man. He loved God with all his heart and is now free of all suffering and pain and is reunited with Chelle and those who have gone before. Best of all, he is with his Heavenly Father. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Morrissett Funeral & Cremation Service, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rte. 10) with his Celebration of Life starting at 2 p.m. He will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park, privately among his immediate family. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church, 2865 SW County Rd. 661, Arcadia, FL 34266, to be used at their discretion and to the glory of God.
