Ann B. Fichter of Williamsburg, VA, died of cancer on January 31, 2013.
Ann was born in Winston-Salem, NC on Dec. 3, 1933, to Howard and Emma Bowles, and grew up in Wilmington, NC. Following graduation from East Carolina University with a degree in Mathematics and Business, she came to NACA (now NASA) in Hampton, VA, where she met her soulmate in a graduate math class. She became Mrs. Wilbur Bryan (Buck) Fichter on August 30, 1958.
Her third career, after motherhood, started when she joined the faculty of Hampton Roads Academy in 1971, where for 27 years she was mathematics teacher and Department Chair. Ann received numerous letters of commendation for excellence in teaching from MIT and the Governor's School for the Gifted. The tributes she treasured most have been those personal notes that she received from former colleagues and students during her illness. They evoked many special memories from the 70's, 80's and 90's. Ann was not shy in the classroom or in the academic community. One Headmaster said she needed assertiveness training as much as did Atilla, the Hun. Affectionately, a senior graduation speaker referred to her as the guardian junkyard dog of the senior class. In three yearbook dedications, Ann was praised by the students as an empathetic source of wisdom who always seemed to anticipate when intervention was needed. After retirement in 1998, she was selected for the HRA Wall of Honor.
Ann and Buck were blessed to have had nearly fifteen retirement years together, to enjoy many stays at Emerald Isle, NC, as well as trips to Germany and Russia, and numerous visits with their children and grandchildren, who are Lee Ann, John, and Jessica VanOrmer of Centreville, VA; and Bryan, Deborah, Dane, and Shelby Fichter, of Ellicott City, MD. Their love and support brought a comfort to Ann that no medicine could have provided.
The family would like to share happy memories with friends at a casual reception on Saturday, February 16 from 3 to 5 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg. Memorial contributions may be made to Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Rd., Kanab, UT 84741, Williamsburg Regional Library, 515 Scotland St, Williamsburg, VA 23185 and Hampton Roads Academy, 739 Academy Ln., Newport News, VA 23602.
