ANNABELLE "ANN" WHITENER
NEWTON - Mrs. Annabelle "Ann" Hopper Whitener, 81, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice.
She was born October 4, 1931 in Etowah County, AL, the daughter of Joseph and Lillie Higdon Hopper. She was an active parishioner of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where she volunteered in many of the church ministries. She was a Registered Nurse, retired from Sam's Club and enjoyed reading. Her family and friends were her greatest enjoyment. She never met a stranger and her greatest joy was talking to people. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert "Bob" M. Whitener; a daughter, Jennia Marie Young: a sister, Sue Spidell and a brother, W.B. Hopper.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Gilbert of Archdale and Joan Stacey and husband, Mike of Wilmington; two sons, Andy Whitener and wife, Pam of Connelly Springs and Tim Whitener and wife, Beth of Hickory; a sister Myrtle Harris of Attalla, AL; three brothers, L.J. Hopper, R.B. Hopper and D.L. "Delbo". Hopper all of Attalla, AL; eight grandchildren, Justin Gilbert, Brandon Gilbert, Wendy Whitener, Mandy Whitener, Ross Young, Anah Whitener, Sera Whitener and Katy Stanley; numerous nieces, nephews and family friends.
A celebration of Ann's life will be held at a funeral mass at 12:10 PM Wednesday, January 16th at St. Joseph's Catholic Church by Fr. James M. Collins. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the mass at the church.
