Captain Arnim Lionel Harris, Jr., Eastern Airlines, Retired, 87, passed away on May 27, 2012. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Arnim Lionel "Dealy" Harris, Sr. and Josephine Sweitzer Harris, his daughter Martha Angelique Harris Paramore, and his son Russel Brock Harris. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Brock Harris, daughter Victoria H. (John) Stephens, son Arnim Lionel "Chip" Harris III, and daughter Jennifer H. (Billy) Melton; seven grandchildren: Amy (Troy) Powell, Robert (Crystal) Paramore, Amanda "Betsy" Stephens, Rebecca A. Hedrick, Mary C. "Catie" Harris, Kevin A. Hedrick, and Christopher L. Harris; four great-grandchildren: Madison E. Powell, Megan A. Powell, Jonathan B. Powell, and Karli Maxey, his brother Carol Lee (Peggy) Harris, and his sister Jeannette H. Wade and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his "adopted" family, Dale Pyne, Michael and Valerie Poarch, David Hahn and Susan Moss. A WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy, he returned to Richmond and began his aviation career as a crop duster at the old Hermitage Airport. He joined Eastern Airlines in 1953 and retired in 1985 after 32 years with the rank of Senior Captain. He headed the Accident Investigating team of the Air Line Pilots Association. Because of his service, ALPA named him Pilot of the Year in 1979. He was chairman of the committee that designed the cockpit of the Boeing 757. His career spanned the Golden Age of airline travel beginning with the Lockheed Constellation propliners and ending with Douglas DC-9 jets. He was a founding member of the Richmond Chapter of the Quiet Birdmen and a volunteer at the Virginia Aviation Museum. In 2007 he was inducted into the VAHS Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame for his contributions to flight safety. His many hobbies included painting, cars, and airplanes. His family would like to thank Dr. Minh Bui, Dr. Ellen G. Bedichek and all of the amazing nurses and doctors with Hospice of Virginia for their unfailing care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society, 5701 Huntsman Road, Richmond Int'l. Airport, VA, 23250, or Hospice of Virginia, 1700 Bayberry Court, Richmond, VA 23226. Visitation will be at Nelsen Funeral Home, Reid Chapel, in Ashland Virginia on Wednesday 6-8, and Thursday, 2-4 and 6-8. The funeral will be held at the Church of Latter Day Saints, Montpelier, VA, at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and interment will occur at Walnut Well, Montpelier, VA.
