Charles A. "Chuck" Gurtler, 91, of Williamsburg, passed away on August 17, 2012. Born June 26, 1921, Chuck loved fishing, boating, traveling (especially in his RV), singing in the church choir, participating in various projects at the church, and fixing anything that needed it.
Chuck was employed for over 30 years as an aeronautical research scientist at NASA. He worked in the Sensor Development Section (which he headed) within the Flight Instrumentation Division of NASA. He led the experiments for the Lunar Orbiter's micrometeoroid detection. These experiments culminated in three patents: Pressurized Cell Micrometeorite Detector, Ablation Sensor, and Dual Measurement Ablation Sensor. He retired in March 1976.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Patricia B. Gurtler; son, Don Gurtler and his wife, Linda; daughter, Gail Reed and her husband, Dr. Michael Reed; daughter, Jane Perry and her husband, Ed; six grandchildren, Sarah Gurtler, Adam Gurtler and his wife, Danya; Laura Mattern and her husband, Kurt; Brian Reed and his wife, Jenna; Ben Perry, and Matt Perry; and two great-grandchildren, Isabel and Charlie Mattern; as well as a brother, Homer Gurtler and his wife, Barbara. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Moseley and Virginia Loebeck.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 20 at 2:00 PM at Patriots Colony, Williamsburg. Interment will be held privately at Peninsula Memorial Park.
