Charles I. Martin, 94, of Richmond, died peacefully January 11, 2013, surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his wife, of 69 years, Gwendolyn Hudson and son, Douglas T. Martin. He was the youngest and last surviving child of Lucius and Berta Martin of Halifax County. Mr. Martin is survived by his children, Nancy Martin Hoopes (Jack) of Lake Lure, N.C., Billy G. Martin, Charles B. Martin, Sr. (Betty Dale), all of Sandston; grandchildren, Nikki Annen, Greg Martin, Christie Martin, Charlie Martin, Jason Martin, Jennifer Martin Payne, Shane Wooten, Kelly Ramsey, Sandra Martin Pedersen, and Robert Martin; step-grandchildren, John Hoopes, Molly Hoopes, and Duncan Hoopes; and twenty-four great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and a tobacco farmer in Halifax County before moving to Richmond. He then worked at Liggett and Myers until retirement. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He will always be remembered for his kind, gentle, and loving manner. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, January 14, 2013 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. Richmond, Va 23231, where a funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Washington Memorial Park. The family thanks the nurses and staff of Sitter and Barfoot Veterans Care Center for their skill and loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Bridge Baptist Church, 5701 Elko Rd. Sandston, Va 23150.
