Constantino “Dean” P. Vurnakes, 58, of Hopewell passsed away Friday, January 14, 2011 in MCV Medical Center. Dean was preceded in death by his first wife, Valerie K. Vurnakes, mother-in-law, Despina (Loula) Kolidakis and his parents, Peter G. and Mary Davis Vurnakes. Mr. Vurnakes enjoyed his family and friends, boating and was an avid motorcyclist. Dean’s quick whit, smile and laughter would light up a room. He was employed by the U. S. Government at Fort Lee in Internet technology and a full time honors student at John Tyler Community College, a member of Saint Elpis Greek Orthodox Church and was very active, holding many offices and leadership positions, an AHEPA member since 1978, holding every office in the local chapter, a partner in Piccolo’s from 1977 to 1990, a district manager with Wendys in Richmond for many years, owner of Old Dominion Wireless. He is survived his wife, who truly adored him, Diane Starke Vurnakes, son, Steve C. Vurnakes and his wife, Sasha, daughter, Carlie, brother, Bill Vurnakes and his wife, Julie, two sisters, Hedy Thevaos and her husband, Jim and Angie Vurnakes, father-in-law, George Kolidakis, best friend and like a brother, Spiro Georgogianis, very close friend, Lynn Allen, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 214 N. 6th Avenue, Hopewell, VA. There will be an APHEA service followed by a Trisagion Prayer service at 7:00 pm. A Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 10:00 am in the Saint Elpis Greek Orthodox Church with Father Jon Emanuelson officiating. Interment will be in Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Saint Elpis Greek Orthodox Church, P.O. Box 1204, Hopewell, VA 23860.
