David Stephen "Steve" Roberts, 61, passed away peacefully at his home in Chapin on Sunday November 11, 2012 after a 10 month battle with cancer. Steve was the loving husband of 30 years to Katherine Randolph Roberts. He was born on January 19, 1951 in Columbia to John F. and Mae W. Roberts and grew up attending Park Street Baptist Church. He was a 1969 graduate of Eau Claire High School where he played football on the 1967 AAA State Championship team. He received a degree from Midland's Technical College after serving his country in the U. S. Army in the Canal Zone, Panama.
Steve worked at South Carolina Educational Television as a Field Technician from 1973 until his retirement in 2000. He enjoyed his retirement spending time with his family, striper fishing on Lake Murray, hunting, afternoons with his S&S buddies, and traveling with his and Kathy's "Beach Buddy" friends. He was a member of Chapin United Methodist Church where he was active in the Contemporary Worship Service as a member of the Audio/ Visual team.
In addition to his parents, John and Mae Roberts, and wife Kathy, Steve is survived by his daughters and sons-in- law, Melissa R. and Jamie D. Cooper and grandson Justin P. Greider of Blythewood; Beth R. and David F. Montgomery and grandchildren Faith Stanberry, Ryan Stanberry, Dylan Stanberry and Brooke Montgomery of Chapin; sister and brother- in- law, Drs. Janet R. and M .Thomas Edwards and nephews Benjamin, Parks and David Edwards of Greenville; brother- in- law Michael A. Mallia and nephews Chris and Eric Mallia of Columbia. He is also survived by his mother-in- law, Della P. Randolph of Chapin and in-laws, Nancy and Bob Cole, Homer and Pat Randolph all of Chapin, Becky and Tony Fazzini of Hilton Head, Debra and Rob Ellis of Savannah, GA. Steve was predeceased by his sister, Nancy R. Mallia and grandson, Brent A. Stanberry.
A Celebration of Steve's life will be held at Chapin United Methodist Church 415 Lexington Avenue in Chapin, SC at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 13, 2012 from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, 7600 Woodrow Street, Irmo, SC 29063.
