Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Edward Dawson "Grandpa" Pitts died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2011, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born in Kidds Fork on May 3, 1927, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Harry W. Pitts. Grandpa joined the Navy at age 17 and served during World War II. He later joined the Army and served in Korea and Vietnam. He retired after 24 years of service and then worked for the Department of interior, based in Luray.
Survivors include his wife, Laria Samuel Pitts; six stepchildren; a brother, Robert W. "Dick" Pitts; four sisters, Lillian P. Pavy, Mabel P. Weymouth, Ellen P. Carter and Ruth E. Pitts; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, Dec. 3, at Antioch Christian Church, Bowling Green, with Dr. William Blake officiating.
