Edwin Goode Barnes, Jr. of Courthouse Road, Prince George County, went to be with his shipmates on August 3, 2010. He served as a fireman/water tender in the United States Merchant Marine during World War II, and served in the United States Army. He served aboard seven Liberty ships during and after the war. He was an active member of Project Liberty Ship and helped to restore the Liberty Ship SS John W. Brown. Ed was a retired power plant operator from the Chesterfield Allied Chemical plant and from Anheuser Busch in Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his son Donald W. Barnes, and by his sister Edna Lee Underwood. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Louise, his son William J. Barnes (Maureen), six grandchildren and five great grandchildren; two sisters, Blanche Aileen Lee of Portsmouth and Mable (Mae) Griffin (Marvin) of Norfolk; one brother Carl Barnes (Libby) of Tenn. He had many nieces and nephews. Edwin Barnes loved his country, his family, friends and books. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 pm Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 214 N. 6th Avenue, Hopewell, VA. He had an unending love affair with the sea, where he will be buried. Condolences may be registered at: www.nelsencares.com.
