Elizabeth (Betty) Hancock Swensk died on June 9, 2012, at the York Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center in Yorktown, VA, after a long illness. Betty was born on April 13, 1921, in New Britain, CT, the daughter of Elizabeth Benn Hancock and A. Tyson Hancock. A member of Alpha Alpha Sorority, she graduated from New Britain High School in 1939 and New Britain Teachers' College in 1943. She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) O. Swensk in 1974, and her daughter, Sallie in 2000.

Betty was a well-respected and beloved elementary school teacher in the New Britain Public schools for 31 years. She brought her sense of wonder and enthusiasm for learning into the classroom. She enjoyed reading and was a talented artist. She had a great sense of humor, always spoke her mind and encouraged those around her to follow their dreams.

As a young adult, Betty fell in love with Nantucket Island and shortly thereafter, she and her husband bought and restored a lovely old home there which they ran as a bed and breakfast lodge in the summers for thirteen years. After the death of her husband and her retirement from teaching, she relocated to Williamsburg, VA where she opened another antique business.
