On February 20, 2012, at a little after midnight, at the age of 92, the clock of life ticked down its final moments for the beloved Rosa "Ellen" Buchanan Satterwhite. She is now in the arms of the man who loved her every day of their 64 year marriage, Clarence Broaddus Satterwhite. This gentle, selfless, and amazing woman made magical the most ordinary things for her friends and family. Ellen was the matriarch of a community that loved her, so as did her family of whom she leaves behind three surviving daughters, Shelby Satterwhite DeBruicker, Marilyn Satterwhite Saul, and Vivian "Totsy" Satterwhite Sale and she dearly missed her youngest daughter, Linda Satterwhite Taylor, whom Ellen holds close again. Ellen also leaves behind her devoted and loving grandchildren and great grandchildren, Lauren Ellen DeBruicker, John DeBruicker, Meredith Saul Touchstone, William Touchstone and Berkeley Touchstone, as well as a large extended family of sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, sons-in-law, and so many others. Laura Seat and Iolia Lee, caregivers and angels in Ellen's everyday life, will miss her deeply with the rest of the family. We cannot forget her ever-faithful dog who brought her so much joy in her final years, Little Girl. To celebrate the last year of her long and storied life of raising children, some hers and some not, rescuing animals, and spoiling all that she knew with love and good southern food, Mother Nature celebrated her with a hurricane on her birthday and snow for her passing, both signs of the great impact that she had on the world around her. Her treasured friends, family, and community will miss her always and forever. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, VA. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at Taylorsville Baptist Church, interment in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent in Ellen's honor to Doswell Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, a cause near to Ellen's heart.
