Fred E. Owens, 76, born and raised in Williamsburg, passed away on July 9, 2012. He was the son of the late Walter and Ethel Owens, grandfather of the late Jessie Elizabeth, and brother of the late Al "Butch" Owens.

Mr. Owens proudly served with the U.S. Marines and played professional baseball for the Chicago Cubs farm team. He had an extraordinary career with the Department of Defense, from where he retired after 32 years. In his spare time, he was an avid golfer and completely restored his 1929 Model A. And most of all, he was very devoted to his wife and children.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Sandy Owens; son, Shawn Owens (Amy); daughters, Jenny Mowry and Deena Owens; grandchildren, Samantha and Jarod Mowry and Evan and Garrett Owens; sisters, Patty Stewart (Buck) and Frances Mylum (Frank); and sister-in-law, Ann Owens.

The family will receive friends on Friday, July 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 14 at Cedar Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 5018, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5018. Online condolences may be offered at www.nelsencares.com.

We must not forget Dad's niece and newphews that were a joy to his life. Also his Mother in Law, who we all know as Tamma. Paul Kirby has also been a big part of dads life in the past 4 years, he took dad out thrieft store shopping at the beach, also to get hair cuts and numerous other things. Mac who was Dad's best friend were childhood friends and he was there till the end. There are so many people who touched dad's life Thank You

Fred,
This is a letter of thanks to you which is long overdue. I have often thought about saying something to you, but in my inevitable style just kept putting it off. I have wanted to say thank you for all the sacrifices you have endured in the past, along with men such as yourself and “Mac” that have enabled Linda and I to continue living under the type of freedom that you have ensured has been preserved throughout our history since the Revolution.
It is only through your giving of yourself and all that was expected of men like you that freedom exists in the United States. If you take a second and stand back you would see the effect you have had upon the future of our Nation. A direct link exists that I’m sure you have never even considered looking closer into. If in fact it wasn’t for you and your “brothers in arms”, A.J. would never have had the opportunities that you have allowed him to have.
The sacrifices you endured provided him the time to grow up and learn the importance of freedom and the fact that “Freedom is not Free”, and has enabled him to learn the meaning of love of that freedom and the desire to commit his life to ensure that precious gift is passed on to the next generation. This is a gift that has been provided him by God, but has been kept alive by men such as yourself, and believe me when I say this is not a gift he accepts lightly. He is fully aware of the commitment necessary and if need be he is willing to give the ultimate gift to protect and nurture this ideology.
The enclosed packet is something that in fact belongs more to you than it does to me since thousands of your “brothers” gave the ultimate for it, and the ideology it represents. It is part of the beach head at one of the landing sights at Iwo Jima collected by A.J. in the pictures I sent to you. If a time ever comes when you feel emotionally alone use it as a reminder that as long as there is even one Marine alive you are never alone. You have at least one” Brother” and God with you.
