Gordon E. Smithers, 87 of Bowling Green died Sunday March 4, 2012 in Bowling Green Health and Rehab Center.

He was "raised on a dairy farm" and only left his hometown to serve in the Pacific during World War II. He was a paratrooper with the Army's 11th Airborne and made several combat jumps while in the Philippines and New Guinea. He was a Deacon, Trustee and choir member at Calvary Baptist Church and a member of Kilwinning-Crosse Masonic Lodge AF&AM #2-237. Gordon had a long career with the telephone company. He first went to work for Tidewater Telephone, then Contel and finally retired from GTE (Verizon). He also had worked at the funeral home in Bowling Green for over 40 years and was the "face" of Storke Funeral Home up until the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Daisy Smithers; his daughter Margaret Holland "Holly" O'Brien and her husband Brendan of Texas; his grandchildren, Brian Cale of Indiana and Kristie and Katie O'Brien of Texas; several nieces and nephews, among them his God daughter, Barbara Mainhart Ruppel. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Lee Gordon Smithers.

A funeral service will be held Saturday March 10th at 11:00 AM in Calvary Baptist Church, with Pastor Melvin Covington officiating. After the burial at Greenlawn Cemetery, there will be a reception at the church. The family will receive friends Friday 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green.
