Lawrence (Larry) Melvo MacFarland, 79, passed away on 2/12/2013 at Florida Hospital Tampa in Tampa, FL. He was born on 11/20/1933 in Detroit, MI to John Donald and Arlene Vivian (Hanks) MacFarland.
Larry grew up in Detroit, MI. He graduated from John H Persian High School in Detroit, MI in 1952.
After high school he joined the Airforce in January 1953, achieving the rank of A/1C (P) and served for 4 years as an Aircraft Mechanic on Medium Jet Bombers. He was a Korean War Veteran.
After being honorably discharged, he earned an Associates Degree and he worked for numerous companies, including General Motors, GE and Thetford working with diamond drills and most notably as a Purchasing Agent. While working, he took airplane pilot training and also became a master sail boat pilot. He retired in 1990.
He then sailed his Non-Such sail boat, "Cat Dancing", from Detroit, Michigan to Sarasota, Florida where he resided with his first wife, Genevieve until their divorce in 1997.
Larry married the love of his life, Karen Lynn on February 28,1997 at Lettuce Lake Park in Temple Terrace, Florida. They were inseparable for their almost 16 years of marriage. They enjoyed relaxing at home, walking on the beach, watching sunsets, and visiting Busch Gardens and SeaWorld. They traveled to Scotland, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine, researching their family tree. They also made trips to Switzerland, Grand Cayman, Bonaire, Las Vegas, Oregon, California, New Orleans, Biloxi, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. They often travelled back to Michigan to be with family. And they took several cruises include ones to Alaska, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Belize, St Maarten, St Lucia, St Kitts, Bermuda, and San Juan.
Larry loved nature and enjoyed tending to his bird feeders daily. He was a kind, caring man with a twinkle in his blue eyes and a great sense of humor. He will be deeply missed.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, John Donald and mother, Arlene Vivian and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Gaelic Blessing

Deep peace of the running wave to you.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shining stars to you.
Deep peace of the gentle night to you.
Moon and stars pour their healing light on you.
Deep peace of Christ,
of Christ the light of the world to you.
Deep peace of Christ to you.
