Lucy Elizabeth Stainback England, 86, widow of Thomas Matthew England, died peacefully at her home in Claremont,Va., on Wednesday, May 12, 2010. She was born in Pleasant Shade, Va., daughter of the late Ida Lois Clary and John Clifton Stainback. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilber Wallace Stainback of Franklin and Ralph Clifton Stainback of Emporia. She is survived by her older sister, Jesse Mae Stainback England Jerrell of Hopewell, and a dear friend, Laura Leatherwood of Claremont. Immediate survivors include Lucy’s four children, Lucy Elizabeth England Woessner and husband Jim; Thomas Matthew England Jr. and wife Missia; John David England and wife Clissa; and Susan England Lester and husband Jim. Also nine grandchildren, Deborah W. Eilts, Sandra Woessner and Kimberly W. Kelly; Thomas Matthew England III, Kandace Kara England ; Elspeth Alma, Leatha Ellen and Emmalyne Joyce England; and Ashley Ford Lester; and 10 great-grandchildren. Upon birth, Lucy was placed on the cradle roll of Monumental United Methodist Church in Emporia. Lucy was a longtime member of the Claremont United Methodist Church, serving as a trustee for a number of years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women’s Group, the Argus Woman’s Club, the Rusty Needle and the Garden Club of Claremont. Lucy loved to garden and especially loved roses, which she grew at her Claremont home. She provided floral arrangements for her church for many years.The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:30 pm Sunday, May 16, 2010 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 214 North 6th Ave., Hopewell and where funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 am Monday, May 17, 2010.
