A celebration of the life of Mary Ellen Chisolm (54) will be held Sunday, July 8 at her home at 4400 Powhatan Crossing in Williamsburg from 4 to 6pm. She died on July 3, 2012 after a valiant battle with breast cancer. Born in Greenville, SC, Mary was the daughter of the late Leland DeLoach and Lula Chandler Chisolm. She graduated from the Shenadoah Conservatory of Music and from William & Mary College with an advanced degree in Special Education. She was a creative and compassionate teacher of preschool children with special needs at schools in York and James City Counties. Mary was a fun-loving and optimistic person who gave joy to her friends, family, and other cancer patients at PCI. She is survived by her two sons, Calum and Aidan Welch; by her husband, Richard Schumann, of Williamsburg; a brother, Del (Chris) Chisolm of Austin, TX; and a sister Leah (Alston) Gore of Columbia, SC. Special thanks to the doctors and staff at Peninsula Cancer Institute and to Ruth Kaiser at Sentara Hospital Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the charities of one's choice.
