Melvina P. Hanson, 83, formerly of the Iowa City, Solon, and West Branch area, died Monday, February 11, 2013, at Windmill Manor Care Center in Coralville.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, February 14, 2013, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with burial to follow at Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be after 9am Thursday until services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be given in her memory to Hospice. Melvina Pearl Hanson was born August 25, 1929, in Ringsted, Iowa, the daughter of Sebo and Sylvia (McLaughlin) Behrends. She was united in marriage to Carl W. "Bill" Hanson on January 19, 1947. For a number of years the couple farmed near Ringsted until moving to the Iowa City area where Melvina cared for her family, worked for the University of Iowa, and later while living in West Branch worked for Caseys and McDonalds there. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge and VFW Post No. 3949.
Her family includes her children, Roger (Karma) Hanson of Washington, IA; Donna (John) Erickson of Minneapolis, MN; Rodney (Ileen) Hanson of Atalissa; Russell (Connie) Hanson of Iowa City; Randy (Donna Henry) Hanson of Cedar Rapids; Ray (Debbie) Hanson of Hills; and Darla Blair of Iowa City; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sister, Edna and daughter-in-law, Rhonda Hanson.
Melvina was preceded in death by her son, Richard "Dick" Hanson; grandson, Jeremy; and her former husband, Bill.
