Noel Alan Carroll, 77, of Williamsburg, died on Jan. 18, 2013. He had diabetes.

He is survived by his wife, Gudi M. Carroll and daughters, Tina M. Carroll and Cindy Harvel and her husband, Ric; grandchildren, Jarod and Jason Harvel, and their children; and beloved cousin, Douglas E. Foster, who he regarded as a brother.

Noel was born the July 14, 1935 in Wheeling, WV, the son of Willa Sands Carroll Florio and Al Carroll, who died when Noel was 5 years old. His mother remarried to Ottie Florio, Noel's beloved stepfather.

Noel volunteered and served in the U.S. Army from 1956 until he was discharged as an honorable veteran in 1958. After his military service, Noel began his long career with the Department of Defense in 1959 and continued working for more than 40 years with the U.S. Government.

Noel spent more than 19 years working abroad in defense of and for the U.S.A., including full two-year tours in Taiwan, Germany, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Turkey and shorter assignments in many other countries. Noel was an extremely patriotic individual, believing strongly in American values and the continued defense of personal freedom and a democratic way of life.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Jan 23 from 6-8 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Jan 26 at 11 AM in Greenwood Chapel at Greenwood Cemetery in Wheeling, West Virginia where Noel will be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, the family requests "memorials should take the form of being nice to other people and enjoying fishing and hunting to the utmost", per Noel A. Carroll.
