Ralph Welton Wilson, Sr., 78, of Gloucester, Virginia passed away peacefully at the Hospice House of Williamsburg surrounded by his family on Monday, September 3, 2012. Ralph spent most of his life in Williamsburg, Virginia moving as a child from Nash County, North Carolina to Williamsburg in 1942 and then moving to Gloucester in 2006.

Mr. Wilson is survived by Carol, his wife of 57 ½ years. He also leaves behind four loving children, Ralph Wilson, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Martha; Diane Wilson; Katherine Wilson Williams; Donald Wilson and daughter-in-law, Deborah. He was blessed to have six grandchildren growing up locally, Kimberly Fischer; Adam Wilson and his wife, Jennifer; Kaitlin Riley; Alexandra Wilson Chuckney and her husband, Mark; Christopher Williams; and Lane Wilson along with two great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brother, Eugene Wilson.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lindsey Wilson and his mother and step-father; Basil and Beulah Joyner Brown, also of Williamsburg; along with his brother, Jerry Wilson.

Ralph was a man of few words, great integrity and strength. He demonstrated the depth of his love and kindness through countless acts of generosity and selfless services. He is known locally for making the best BBQ and sauce and has provided meals for many fundraising events. At times through his life, he had restored antique cars back to their original glory. Ralph proudly built each home he lived in and the yards are evidence of his ability to build anything, from garden structures, such as potting sheds, pergolas, sidewalks, even Adirondack chairs. He enjoyed hunting, garden projects and spending time with family and friends.

He served proudly in the United States Navy during the Korean War and spent most of his adult life in an impressive career with the same company, retiring for the second time in 2008. However, what he most wanted to be remembered for is that he was a devoted son and brother, committed husband, loving father and grandfather.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, September 7, 2012 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, Virginia 23188. Those wishing to send online condolences may do so at www.nelsencares.com.
