Coates, Richard Alvis, 89, of Doswell, VA, died October 6, 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents, R. Gilman and Jessie A. Coates and a sister, Elsie Armentrout. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lorena Howard Coates; three daughters, Evelyn C. Vaughan (Reggie), Anne C. Schwartz (Steve) and Judith C. Rowe; a special niece, Teresa H. Carroll (Pat); five grandchildren, Lynda S. O'Connell, Jennifer S. Cromwell, John David Vaughan, Kimberly D. Mecom and Christopher Rowe; seven great-grandchildren, Sydney and Peyton O'Connell, Akira, Alanna and Abigail Vaughan, Lawson and Addison Mecom; very dear and special friends, Alvin and Cindy Walsh, and his brother-in-law, William D. Armentrout.
Richard served his Country proudly in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946; he leaves a legacy of beautiful homes and businesses that he built during his career as a masonry contractor. He was a lifelong member of Independence Christian Church where he served as a deacon, trustee, and member of the building committee.
The family wishes to thank the ICU, Hospice and 2nd floor nurses at St. Mary's for their loving and dedicated care.
The family will receive friends in the Nelsen Funeral Home, Reid Chapel, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, VA on Saturday, October 8th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 9th in Independence Christian Church with burial in the Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Independence Christian Church Cemetery Fund.
