He is survived by his dedicated, selfless and devoted wife of 59 years, Pattie Martin Saunders, his older brother, William G. Saunders, his three children, Nancy Carol Saunders, Richard L. Saunders, Jr., and Laurie Saunders Poole and his five grandchildren, Cosmo A. Saunders, Madelyn R. Saunders, Richard L. Saunders, III, Cyrus J. Sorenson and Chance L. Sorenson.

"Dickie" started his teaching career at LaCross High School and was principal at Smithfield High School, Bowling Green Senior High School and Caroline High School.
