Born July 2, 1923 in Farmville, VA to Sidney Gaylord Sheldon and Ada Elizabeth Rudd, Sidney E. "Pete" Sheldon, 89, a resident of Williamsburg, passed away on July 19, 2012.

After his school years, Pete worked for his father, who owned Sheldon Lumber Company in Toano. Pete proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II, returning after the war to work with the family lumber business again. He then began his own trucking business, hauling wood for his father. Ever the consummate self-employed businessman, Pete purchased and began managing his own mill, Sheldon Wood Products, of Toano, manufacturing wooden pallets and various wood products, shipping them throughout the East Coast for over 46 years. He retired in 1999.

A tireless servant of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Pete was a faithful member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Toano for over 60 years, having joined in 1952. A 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Pete was a member of the Chickahominy Lodge No. 286. He was recently honored for his 50 years of service to the organization. He also enjoyed his time with the James City County Ruritan Club and served on the James City County Rescue Squad early in his business career. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Roxie P. Sheldon; his daughter, Marilyn Kay Sheldon and her husband, Allyn Gemerek; three grandchildren, Brian Ashley and his wife, Kara; Roxanne Stockman and her husband, Nathan; and Ian Blassingill; three step-grandchildren, Joshua Gemerek and his wife, Robin; Simon Gemerek, Anna Gemerek; five great-grandchildren, William Sidney Ashley, Chandler Smith Ashley, Beckhem Gemerek, Henry Gemerek, and Gabriella Stover.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 21 from 6-8 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg. A service will be held on Sunday, July 22 at 3 PM at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, 7801 Church Lane, Toano, VA 23168, with interment following at the James City Chapel Cemetery.
