William Franklin Dunn, age 90, died Monday, July 9, 2012.
He is remembered as a dear husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend. Bill was born January 29, 1922 in Springfield, IL to James and Mildred Dunn. He survived the Great Depression and was a veteran of the Second World War. He was a proud graduate of the University of IL for both his undergraduate degree and masters in Management. Bill pursued his doctorate degree in Commercial Science at Harvard University, followed by teaching Production in the MIT Business Department.
He followed diverse career paths- consulting with Robert Heller and Associates in Cleveland, working on the first atomic submarine (the Nautilus), and accepting numerous positions with the Department of Housing and Urban Development, from which he retired in 1984.
Bill married his college love, Margaret Stewart on November 20, 1954. They had one son, John S. 'Jack' Stewart Dunn on June 25, 1958.
He was a devoted member of Williamsburg Masonic Lodge No. 6 and a recipient of the Perfect Ashlar award in 1996 for unselfish service and dedication to Freemasonry. Bill was a member of the Shrine Club of Khedive temple, and the Scottish Rite. He belonged to (WISHHH) Williamsburg Self Help for Hard of Hearing, the American Legion posts 139 & 34, the VFW and was a member of Williamsburg United Methodist Church.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Stewart, his son, Jack Dunn, and his daughter-in-law, Deborah Dunn. He is survived by his grandson, William Clifford 'Cliff' Dunn of Newport News; his nephew, Craig Stewart and his wife, Holly and their children, Jack, Lauren, and William; his brother-in-law, Howard Stewart and his wife, Pat; all of St. Louis MO. Many beloved cousins also survive him.
The family will receive visitors from 6-8pm Sunday, July 15, 2012 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg, where the Masonic rites will be administered. A graveside service will take place 11am Monday, July 16, 2012 at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News.
