WILLIAM LEN SHIPMAN, Jr.
William Len "Bill" Shipman, Jr., age 65, of Powell, TN, died on February 8, 2013 following a brief Illness. Bill was the husband of Cynthia J. Gray for 32 years. He was born and raised in Dyersburg, TN, and attended Tulane University and the University of Tennessee. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971. Bill lived in the Knoxville area since 1971 and was a resident of Powell since 1988. Bill was a retired finish carpenter.
Bill was a loving and generous husband and a devoted brother. He served in many volunteer capacities over the years, including the Serenity Club of Oak Ridge and the Boys Scouts of America. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a founding member of the Clinch River Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
In addition to his wife Cyndy, he is survived by a sister, Susan Shipman (Mark Jicha); brother-in-law, David Landgraf; nephews, Keith Landgraf (Amy) and Charlie Jicha; niece, Virginia Betten (Alex); great nephews, Logan Betten and Hudson Landgraf; great niece Cora Betten; Godchildren, Courtney Ellis, Lindsay Kline, Abigail Kline, Nicholas Beckley and Sam Barrett; many first cousins and close friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents William Len Shipman, Sr. and Virginia Dickinson Shipman, and a sister, Linda Shipman Landgraf.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton, TN. Visitation will be held from 12:00 (noon) to 2 pm, preceding the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Boy Scout Troop 320, c/o Jim Dunn, 109 Hendrix Drive, Oak Ridge, TN 37830; Trout Unlimited Clinch River Chapter 662, c/o Dick Geiger, 180 Waterview, Apt. 1001, Oak Ridge, TN 37830; or the Serenity Club of Oak Ridge, Inc., 170 North Jefferson Circle, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
