Captain William Walter Smith, USN, (Retired), passed away on February 14, 2013. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Bradleigh Smith, of Langdon, New Hampshire. Bill is survived by his wife of 35 years, Theresa Smith. He is also survived by his sons, Scott Smith and his daughter-in-law, Cindy of Vancouver, Washington; Mark Smith and his daughter-in-law, Kerri of Yorktown, Virginia; and Andrew Smith of Richmond, Virginia; two grandchildren, Ashlee Smith and Brody Smith; and one great-granddaughter, Addison Harris. His sister, Dianne Potter, her husband, Malcolm, and their family live in Bellows Falls, Vermont. He was loved by his nephews, nieces, brother-in-laws, and their wives. Holding a special place in his heart was his sister-in-law, Marie Medley, and her family.
In November of 1967 Bill entered the United States Navy Medical Service Corps as an Optometrist. He served twenty-six years in the Navy at bases in New York, Florida, Japan, Washington, Virginia, California, and Washington D.C. Having served as commanding officer of NOSTRA, he retired in 1993 on the Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, Virginia. He made Williamsburg, Virginia his home.
Bill had many special memories hunting and fishing with family and friends. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and painting.

A military graveside service will be held at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Friends are welcome to attend. Online condolences may be expressed at www.nelsencares.com.
